Bilingualism and childhood

In an increasingly globalized world, bilingualism has become a key tool for a rounded development of children.

According to several studies conducted by linguists, teaching a child to speak another language in addition to his or her native language will not only open doors to new cultures and experiences but will also help in their development because of the following:

+ bilingual children show a greater ability to switch between tasks and concentrate amid distractions,

+ bilingualism helps improve memory,

+ bilingual children have been found to have better reading comprehension and show greater ability to understand complex concepts as well as expressing their ideas more clearly,

+ bilingual children have a greater openness to new ideas and have also been found to be more empathetic and tolerant of others,

+ in the case of children who belong to multicultural families, speaking more than one language strengthens their sense of identity and belonging and helps them maintain a strong connection to their cultural and family roots.

When we make sure that our children learn more than one language, we are not only preparing them for the future (bilingual people have greater job and academic opportunities in the globalized world in which we live): we are helping them in their social and intellectual growth. Bilingualism in childhood is much more than learning another language: it is opening the door to a world of possibilities.

There are several online and face-to-face options that help in learning another language. If you are interested, let us know and we will contact you to share what we know.

We hope this post is helpful.

Until next time!
