Pathological Demand Avoidance Disorder (PDA)

Pathological Demand Avoidance Disorder (PDA) is a psychological condition that affects a person’s ability to express needs and ask for help appropriately.

PDA is characterized by excessive fear or anxiety when asking for help. This fear or anxiety can be paralyzing in an extreme case to the extent that the person prefers not to ask for the help he or she requires, and this can have important consequences in daily life (from interpersonal relationships to poor academic and work performance as well as decreased self-esteem).

It is essential for parents to recognize the symptoms of PDA in their children and loved ones. Some signs that could indicate PDA are:

+ persistent resistance to ask for help (even in situations where the person clearly needs such help),

+ avoidance of social situations that involve demanding attention,

+ feelings of distress or frustration due to the inability to communicate needs.

Supporting people with PDA requires creating a supportive environment in which they feel safe to express their needs. This may include:

+ encouraging open and honest communication,

+ offering praise and positive reinforcement for communication attempts,

+ providing strategies to manage anxiety associated with asking for help.

It is crucial to seek professional help to make the correct diagnosis and offer help appropriately. Therapists specializing in cognitive-behavioral therapy or other treatment modalities can provide specific tools and techniques to address the symptoms of PDA and improve communication and interpersonal relationship skills.

PDA is a condition that can have a significant impact on the daily lives of those who experience it (especially children).  With the right support and understanding from parents, teachers, and adults those affected by PDA can learn to manage their symptoms and live a full and satisfying life.
