Homework

Let´s be honest! One of the things that a child may like the least is doing homework, that is, the activities that they are asked to do at home as reinforcement of what they see in the classroom.

Sound familiar? Surely you and I went through the same thing in our childhood!

And two questions that we consider key in this issue are: why is homework important? And as parents, how can we encourage our children to do their homework?

Some personal comments on the first question:

+ Homework reinforces the knowledge acquired in the classroom (perhaps this is its main advantage),

+ Homework develops discipline and responsibility (two habits that will undoubtedly help the child throughout their life),

+ Homework allows us to evaluate if the child really learned a topic and if it is necessary at a given time to review it.

And some recommendations on the second question:

+ It is essential that as parents we get involved in the completion of the child’s schoolwork: of course, we do not mean that we do their homework but that we help them with those things that are difficult for them,

+ establish a defined schedule to do homework (in our case we try to get our child to do his homework before dinner since we notice that this is when he is most willing, after having played or practiced a sport),

+ explain the benefit: it is better if the child sees homework not as a tedious obligation but as something that benefits him, and for this it is important to explain this clearly and at his level,

+ Make it fun! As much as possible, it helps a lot if the child sees homework as a game, and this depends a lot on the skill of teachers and parents.

In our personal experience we must admit that we do struggle for our child to do his homework, however, as parents we are aware of the importance it has in his school and personal development and we have also applied the above recommendations, with good results.

As always, as we say in all our articles: if at any given time you need help for your son or daughter to do their homework, seek professional advice.
