A new sport

Recently we had the opportunity to have some relatives living in Australia visit us. And in one of the family reunions we had, they taught the children of the family a sport that is very popular in that part of the world but is little known in Mexico: cricket.

The first thing they did was to explain the rules of this sport, and in very simple terms these are the rules:

+ it is played between two teams of eleven players each,

+ The basic elements to play cricket are a bat, a ball (made of rubber and very hard) and three wickets per team,

+ The teams take turns throwing the ball and batting the ball (similar to baseball, although the ball is thrown in a very special way). The bat is also different from baseball’s as it is shaped like a small paddle),

+ The batting team tries to hit the ball and when it succeeds it runs between the posts of each team to score runs, while the team that throws the ball tries to knock down the three posts of the opposing team,

+ when all the batsmen of a team have finished the teams change roles. The team that scores the most runs wins.

These are the basic rules of cricket, although they explained to us that it has many more rules and that it is a very popular sport not only in Australia but also in India, Great Britain, South Africa and even in some Caribbean countries such as Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago: in all these countries cricket is played at amateur and professional level.

It should be noted that the children really enjoyed playing this completely new sport for them, and we adults also really enjoyed watching and participating in this game! We played it in the backyard of a house (we had to improvise to simulate the three sticks of each team) and we all had a great time.

And we want to share with you what we think is something vital for everyone but especially for children nowadays: to be open and willing to always learn new things from other cultures: this is crucial for them especially in the globalized world in which they were born.
